After my first alpine success on Mount Baker, I was contemplating 'what next,' and wondering if my interest in climbing could evolve into a passion. My sights were set on Mount Rainier, often referred to as 'the beast' of the lower 48 for its formidable presence and technical demands. Unlike the spontaneity that led me to Baker, Rainier required more deliberate planning. Despite the typical six-month lead time for guided climbs, fortune favored me with an unexpected opening with International Mountain Guides (IMG) just a month away. Without hesitation, I seized it, embarking on a climb that would test my limits like never before.

My journey to Rainier was not a bucket-list ambition like it seemed for many other folks, rather it was a test. Did the highs and satisfaction on accomplishing something challenging overweigh the preparation, dedication, suffering and risk required for mountaineering? Was Mt Baker a one-off adventure? However, Rainier's reputation for its technical routes and the physical demands was daunting. My preparation, while adequate for Baker, seemed lacking for the colossal Rainier. I was soon going to find out.

The climb was to go through the The Disappointment Cleaver route, known for its accessibility yet challenging terrain. The climb's initial days were a battle against harsh weather, pushing the group to its limits. However, my previous experiences in the outdoors lent me a slight edge in resilience. As we ascended, the weather and exhaustion whittled down our numbers, each break provided me an extra moments to recover.

Crossing the Bowling Alley and scrambling up Disappointment Cleaver in the predawn hours were moments of pure mountaineering thrill. Emerging above the clouds, with the first rays of sun breaking the cold, was a surreal experience that underscored the sheer beauty and terror of alpine climbing. The culmination of this journey atop Rainier was a moment of overwhelming achievement and introspection, described aptly as the most challenging yet rewarding experience of my life.

This climb on Rainier was more than just a test of physical strength; it was a profound affirmation of my passion for mountaineering. The meticulous preparation, the grueling ascent, and the triumphant return not only deepened my respect for the mountains but also solidified my commitment to pursuing these high-altitude adventures. Rainier was not just another summit; it was a milestone that marked my journey's continuation, with the promise of many exciting adventures to follow.
